Present Progressive in Spanish: Verbs ending in -er and -ir

The present progressive is used to talk about things we are doing right now.

Let's use verbs ending in -er and -ir:

Let's take the verb: Comer (to eat).

1. Remove the -er ending.
2. Add the ending -iendo to the stem: Comiendo.

Now, to form a sentence, we are going to use the verb estar as a helping verb.

For example:

• I am eating = Yo estoy comiendo.

Conjugating Comer in the present progressive:

Subject Pronoun	Conjugation	English Translation
Yo	Yo estoy comiendo.	I am eating.
Tú	Tú estás comiendo.	You are eating.
Él/Ella/Usted	Él está comiendo.	He is eating.
	Ella está comiendo.	She is eating.
	Usted está comiendo.	You are eating.
Nosotros	Nosotros estamos comiendo.	We are eating.
Ellos/Ustedes	Ellos están comiendo.	They are eating.
	Ustedes están comiendo.	You all are eating.

You can follow the same pattern for other -er verbs. For example:

• Beber (to drink) → Bebiendo (drinking)
• Leer (to read) → Leyendo (reading) (Note: Irregular form)

Now let's take the verb: Escribir (to write).

1. Remove the -ir ending.
2. Add the ending -iendo to the stem: Escribiendo.

For example:

• I am writing = Yo estoy escribiendo.
